1. Simple Sentences
A simple sentence is always easy to write and depicts only one idea. Many people prefer to write simple sentences because they believe it is easy for the examiner to read and understand.

- One of the principal reasons for smaller family units is birth control.
This sentence includes ‘subject’, ‘verb’, and ‘object’, therefore it categorises into simple sentences. You can write 1 or 2 simple sentences in your essay writing. However, you will still need a variety of sentence types in your writing.
2. Compound Sentences
In a sentence where you depict two ideas, classified as a compound sentence.
For example – Prompt: Developing nations are having a trend towards smaller family sizes.
- Maybe developed nations are focussing on distributing free contraception and educating people for birth control.
You use conjunctions in a sentence to add two ideas in your sentence. And, for, yet, but, so, or, nor, are a few examples of conjunctions.
3. Complex Sentences
When you more than two ideas in your sentence called a complex sentence. And if it is a complex sentence, then the examiner will surely want to look the following words in your sentence.

• Since • Unless • Whereas • Because • Which • So that

The idea behind the complex sentence is to coordinate two or more ideas into a single sentence. Try to write at least 5- 6 complex sentences using the mentioned words. Inevitably, this effort will impress the examiner.
4. Passive Sentence
A passive sentence is called when an object and a subject get reversed in that particular sentence.
For example – Prompt: Developing nations are having a trend towards smaller family sizes.
- Active: This can impact on society in several ways.
- Passive: In several ways, smaller family sizes can be impacted by society.
This type of sentence will help you to get a high score. Try to use 1-2 passive sentences to showcase grammatical range in your IELTS Writing Task 2.
5. Question Sentence
To showcase a variety of sentence types, you also need to write one question type of sentence. Write the question type sentence in the starting, but make sure that the question sentence fits in your essay perfectly.

6. Conditional Sentence
A conditional sentence starts with ‘if’ and express hypothetical situations and their potential consequences.
